What is Telehealth?

Telehealth has made it possible to access healthcare services from the comfort of your own home using a digital/mobile device (computer, tablet or smartphone).

Online consultations with physiotherapists (and other health professionals) remove the need to travel. This makes it possible for those living in rural or remote locations with limited access to health services, or for those living with disability or mobility concerns to access a healthcare professional.

My telehealth service will be up and running shortly, in the meantime here are some answers to some commonly asked questions;

What’s an online/remote appointment like?
Very similar to a face-to-face appointment!
We will discuss your condition and reasons for seeking physiotherapy. You may need to demonstrate some movements and provide detailed answers regarding the issues you are having. Treatment will be discussed, provided via email or app and tracked where appropriate.

How do I connect with you?
A simple and easy method will be used, either by clicking on a link or via an app. The 3 most important things that you will need are;
1.  Computer, laptop, tablet or mobile device with a functioning microphone and camera
2.  Strong and reliable internet connection
3.  Quiet and suitable space where you can move around if needed

Is this Safe, and what about my privacy?
Online or remote consultations are equally as safe as a clinic appointment. In some cases a clinic based appointment may be more appropriate, but this will be identified and telehealth will not be recommended if it is unsuitable. The same privacy standards will be in place for a telehealth appointment as it would for a clinic based one.

Can I do both, clinic and telehealth?
Yes! In some cases a clinic appointment will be required, in other Telehealth will be more appropriate and a mix of the two can be appropriate as well. Each patient is different and your treatment delivery will be individual to you.

What if I don’t have a suitable smartphone/tablet/computer?
Telehealth may still be possible/appropriate depending on what you attending physio for and what your treatment will be. For example over a phone call with emailed/posted treatment plans after an initial face-to-face visit.

Please speak to your physio if you have any questions regarding telehealth and how it may be of benefit. The Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) have further information available here.
